LAX “Recovering Equilibrium” 911 Memorial (Los Angeles)

The tragic events of September 11th have touched the hearts of people across the country and have inspired people to unite in the memory of those lost to senseless acts of terror. In Los Angeles, the community has come together to honor and remember the victims of September 11th through a magnificent memorial titled “Recovering Equilibrium”. Many forget that Los Angeles was the final destination for three of the four hijacked planes on that fateful day, and for that very reason many feel that LAX is the perfect place for this memorial. "Our airport was tragically linked to the terrorists attacks on our nation, as three of the four hijacked flights were bound for LAX. It is fitting and meaningful to memorialize the day and its tremendous impacts with this artwork here at LAX ." said LAWA Interim Executive Director, Kim Day in an interview for the Los Angeles World Airports webpage.

This particular memorial, the work of the art and design team of BJ Krivanek and Joel Breaux was selected from a large group of entries. It is shaped like a compass and features words and phrases that reflect national perceptions, rights, and ideals. These words and phrases include: Home of the Brave, Civil Rights, Made in America, Sea to Shining Sea, Opportunity, Equality, and Justice. Cultural Affairs Department general manager, Margie J. Reese, expressed in her interview that, "The design of the artwork symbolically depicts our personal journey since the tragedy. We hope that each person will walk away with a unique experience.”

WTC Memorial Rebrands, Plans National Tour

The WTC Memorial Foundation has changed its name to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at the World Trade Center, to reflect the nationwide scope of the 9/11 attacks. A new logo (left) references the Twin Towers only obliquely, and is a subtle visual representation of the museums broad scope. "This memorial is every bit of a part of someone's life who is from Columbia (S.C.) as it is someone who lives two blocks from ground zero," Memorial Foundation President Joe Daniels is quoted in Associated Press coverage. "This brings to mind that this not just a New York event."

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum Foundation will begin a 15-city tour through the South and Midwest in September with survivors' stories and artifacts from the planned museum. The tour is designed to raise funds as well as raise awareness of the Memorial and Museum. "This tour needs to be about participation," Daniels is quoted in Newsday coverage. The $5 that is thrown into the pot or the money that comes from a bake sale is just as important" as corporate donations, he said.

Preparedness Update

8.15.07 Congress To Weigh Shrinking FEMA's Mandate

The Federal Emergency Management Agency would still be responsible for the first federal response to future disasters but would not supervise recovery efforts under a new proposal by Senator Mary Landrieu. The move is a reaction to FEMA's failures supervising the recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina. FEMA would be responsible for the core of the response -- getting victims shelter, blankets, and food. But oversight of recovery efforts, which can go on for years, would become the responsibility of other federal agencies with expertise in specific areas: rebuilding housing, fixing roads, cleaning up hazardous spills, and supervising an area's economic revitalization.
