VOICES News Alert

October 29, 2010

Dear Families and Friends,

I am writing to update you on the 9/11 Living Memorial Project and to ask for your assistance. In 2006 VOICES began working with families to create the Living Memorial as a tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost and to document stories of survivors. VOICES staff is committed to working closely with each family to guide you every step of the way. As a family member myself, I understand how important it is to have assistance in organizing and selecting mementos that best represent the life of your loved one.

As the opening of the National September 11th Memorial and Museum quickly approaches, we are working in partnership with the museum to ensure that each victim is represented in a meaningful way when it opens on September 11, 2012. Thus far, our staff has met with over 800 families who have contributed an extensive collection of thousands of photographs, written tributes and personal keepsakes which we have scanned and included in our online collection. These images are being transferred to the Memorial Museum for use in their exhibits.

We have an ambitious goal of meeting with a representative from each of the nearly 3,000 families. Although the project is ongoing, we would encourage you to begin by selecting 10 photographs that are easily accessible. Include some of the most recent photographs you have with family and friends, enjoying a favorite activity or celebrations and a written tribute – such as a newspaper article, letter, or eulogy.

If you have not started your Living Memorial we encourage you to begin now!
