VOICES News Alert

August 13, 2012

Dear Families and Friends,

Volunteer Day PhotoVOICES is fortunate to have a dedicated group of volunteers who lend their time and talents to contribute to the 9/11 Living Memorial Project. These volunteers work directly with the digital images and tributes that families and friends have contributed. With their computer skills, they help enter images and identify information into the VOICES archive system. This work will support the preservation goals of the 9/11 Living Memorial archive and aid in sharing the collected materials with the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Over the past month, volunteer teams from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Goldman Sachs have come to our offices in New Canaan and New Brunswick. Two more volunteer groups from Robert Wood Johnson are planning to return in October. We look forward to having them back!

Employees of Goldman Sachs have volunteered as part of a program the firm calls Community TeamWorks, a Goldman Sachs global volunteer initiative. This program allows employees to take a day out of the office to volunteer with local non-profit organizations. Seven volunteers visited the New Jersey office and eight visited the New Canaan office. They worked on color correcting and resizing photographs, which is an important but time consuming part of the Living Memorial project.

Volunteer Day PhotoMegan Friedman of Goldman Sachs told us that Volunteer Day has been a meaningful experience for her team. "Goldman Sachs Community TeamWorks has been proud to partner with Voices of September 11th for a second year in a row. The service days were extremely well planned and all volunteers found their time at VOICES both meaningful and rewarding. It was especially significant to the groups that the digital content being filed and stored would be used as part of the permanent repository in the 9/11 Living Memorial and the 9/11 Memorial Museum. We look forward to growing the partnership in years to come."

We appreciate all of the volunteers for taking a day out of their busy schedules to support VOICES and for their hard work and dedication. To view additional photos, click here. If you have a group that would like to participate in a Volunteer Day project, contact Frank Fetchet at 203-966-3911 or ffetchet@voicesofsept11.org. No prior experience with archival systems or data entry is necessary - only general computer skills and attention to detail.

I think our volunteers would agree that Volunteer Day is a day you won't forget!
