Legislative Updates

cargo screeneing on passenger flights

On Tuesday, Mary Fetchet joined Congressmen Ed Markey (D-MA), Christopher Shays (R-CT) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) at a press conference in Washington, DC to announce efforts to notify passengers of the dangers of unscreened cargo traveling on passenger flights. Also present were the Association of Flight Attendants and the Coalition of Airline Pilots Associations.

The Representatives will be introducing two amendments to the Homeland Security Department’s Authorization Act (H.R.  1817). The first amendment sets a timetable to ensure all cargo traveling on passenger aircraft is screened by 2008. The second amendment would require passengers to be notified if unscreened cargo is being carried on their aircraft.

At the press conference, Mary stated:  “Our government officials know what our vulnerabilities are, and regrettably so do our enemies. By shirking their responsibility to do everything in their power to keep the Americans safe domestically, these officials are risking another 9/11. We know from Israel and other countries that technology exists that is capable of screening all cargo on American airplanes. The Department of Homeland Security must devote the resources necessary to make this a reality. Making security decisions based on cost analysis is unacceptable - we can no longer afford to gamble with American lives.”
