March 24, 2006

DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS,

Your feedback on our VOICES 4 KIDS site has been fantastic! With your input the site will continue to grow and evolve over time. If you have not visited the site yet, please do so with your children.

Please take a look at "Connecting Survivors," a new section of the e-Newsletter created at the request of our members to help survivors reconnect with the people who touched their lives on 9/11. We have also included updates on several important areas. I ask that you pay particular attention to our Spotlight On the Thread Project - One World One Thread. The creators of the project are requesting items from 9/11 families, survivors and others impacted by 9/11 to be incorporated in a tapestry for the 5th Anniversary. Note the April 15 deadline for those who wish to participate.

I'm writing this week from Barcelona, Spain, where my husband Frank and I are participating in a special conference with the objective of stopping terrorism. Over 50 attendees from around the world have gathered, and we are optimistic about "Building Bridges" among citizens who share VOICES mission. We will provide more details on the conference in next week's e-Newsletter.

Have a wonderful week. As always, please contact our office at (866) 505-3911 or by email if we can be of any assistance.

Warm Regards,

Mary Fetchet

The traumatic events of September 11th created strong bonds between people who survived the attacks or assisted with rescue and recovery-even people who never knew each other's names.

The new "Connecting Survivors" section of VOICES e-Newsletter aims to help reunite survivors with those who gave them assistance and comfort during the attacks.

Please contact us by email if you have any information regarding the person described in this week’s submission from the sister of a firefighter from Engine Company #235 of Bedford Stuyvesant, New York. She writes on his behalf

In brief, after the first tower was struck and collapsed, my brother found himself under an ESU truck in the company of someone wearing what he believes to have been an ATF black windbreaker, a thin black man, with whom he sought refuge and then escape from the debris. After handing the man over to EMS workers just past Stuyvesant HS my brother headed back to the towers just as the second tower collapsed.  The first name of the gentleman my brother is seeking may be Doug - but he does not recall 4 years after 9/11. My brother only just shared this story with me some 3 months ago, and I'm sharing this story in case this gentleman or someone who knows him is also wondering what happened to "that firefighter"

My brother believes that although this man's vision was clouded with debris and the like, his calm encouragement as he held onto my brother's fire coat and relied on him to lead them both to safety kept my brother from panicking, and my brother would like the opportunity to thank that gentleman for his courage that day which gave them both strength. Hopefully this opportunity will give them both something positive to carry forward with them from that day as well.

To submit your own request for the “Connecting Survivors” section of our E-Newsletter and website (the webpage is under construction and will be available soon) please contact us by email with a description of the person you’re seeking with as many details as possible to aid identification.

THE THREAD PROJECT: ONE WORLD, ONE CLOTH

The Thread Project: One World, One Cloth (click to access their website) began with a single thread on the night of September 11, 2001.  Since then, tens of thousands of threads have been received, tied together and woven into seven cloths (like the one pictured at left).  People of all faiths, ideologies and cultures have participated.  Seventy countries and every continent is represented, even Antarctica!

The threads have been pulled from the fabric of people’s lives, from their clothing, fishing rods, baby booties, shoes, blankets, guitars and hundreds of other sources.  Every thread comes spun with the life story and goodwill of the sender, creating not only a weaving of cloth, but also a weaving of people’s hopes and prayers for the world. These World Cloths celebrate diversity, encourage tolerance and promote compassionate community.

The Thread Project is currently requesting threads from people affected by 9/11 to be woven into a special cloth for the five year anniversary. If you would like to send a thread representing your family or a loved one, the last panel of the cloth is being woven on April 15, 2006.  Your thread needs to be received by April 15th in order to be woven into the special 9/11 cloth. We plan to exhibit this tribute to our loved ones at the Voices of September 11th Information Forum, September 10th, 2006 at the Marriott Financial Center hotel. St. Paul’s Chapel, across from the World Trade Center site, will sponsor an exhibit of the cloths on September 11, 2006. For more information about sending a thread, please visit the Thread Project website.
