The 9/11 Memorial Garden in Lower Makefield Township, Pennsylvania will open to the public on September 30, 2006 as the state’s official September 11th memorial. The memorial is currently under construction and will consist of two fountains pointing to the heavens to symbolize healing and rebirth. (see architect's rendering at left). Encircling these fountains will be the names of the 17 people from Bucks County who died on 9/11.
The names of all of the 9/11 victims will comprise the memorial’s Remembrance Walk, which will be lit with 42 lights, each symbolizing one of Pennsylvania residents who died in the attack. "Those who have worked so hard to raise the money and to put this memorial together now have a designation as the official state memorial. That means it is very unlikely there will be another memorial to all the victims of 9-11 in the state and the state can promote this as part of its response to this tragedy and as a site for people to visit, seek solace in the events of that day and to pay respect to the victims,” said Pennsylvania State Representative David Steil, who helped secure the 9/11 Memorial Garden's designation as the state’s official monument. State Rep. Steil is quoted in Yardley (Pa.) News coverage. More information on the 9/11 Memorial Garden can be found on its official website.

PA Cops View "World Trade Center" |

An audience of Port Authority Police attended an advance screening this week in New York of Oliver Stone's new film "World Trade Center." The film opens nationwide on August 9th. According to Jennifer Brown, who is coordinating 9/11 Family outreach for the film, advance screenings for Family Members and survivors in the Northeast are in the works but no dates have been set. VOICES Weekly e-Newsletter will have an update next week on future screenings specifically for the 9/11 Community.

"World Trade Center" centers on the story of retired Port Authority Sgt. John McLoughlin (played by Nicholas Cage, left) and Officer Will Jimeno (played by Michael Pena), who were rescued after many hours trapped in the rubble of the towers. The film has faced criticism from victim's families and others that it is too soon for a realistic--and necessarily dramatic and intense--depiction of the 9/11 attacks. Others have voiced concern that any commercial movie would be exploitive of the heroism and sacrifice on 9/11. But according to Coverage in the New York Daily News, the reviews of those who attended were generally positive--especially regarding the realistic depiction of the scene at Ground Zero after the attacks. "They had it - down to the dust," according to Gus Danese, president of the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association, as quoted in the Daily News. PA Detective Tom McHale, who was a consultant on the film added "I'm glad it was a private screening," he said. "It was raw, but accurate." Screenings were also held this week in Toronto and Dallas.
