This week my husband Frank and I had the pleasure of previewing “The Path to 9/11”, a 5 hour film created by ABC. It will be shown over two evenings on September 10th and 11th. Gov Tom Kean, Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, was a consultant during the film’s two year development and was kind enough to invite us to the opening in Washington, DC. We viewed the first 2.5 hour segment which reenacts events beginning with the 1993 WTC bombing and takes the audience step-by-step through other terrorist events which, when pieced together, show the clear pattern of terrorist activities leading up to 9/11.
Additionally, like many of you, I watched “On Native Soil” which was televised on Court TV this past week. We were very encouraged by the overwhelming response we received following the telecast of the documentary - with hundreds of emails sent to us from individuals who contacted their elected officials demanding that the 9/11 recommendations be implemented. For those of you who may be interested, “On Native Soil” will be televised again this Sunday, August 27th at 2pm on Court TV. Although these films may be difficult to watch, they are critical to educating the general public about the importance of these reforms. VOICES supports the implementation of the 9/11 Commission recommendations and we welcome your involvement. .

Spotlight: Quilters at Sept. 10 Information Forum |

World Trade Center Memorial Quilt -- Our lives were changed forever on 9-11-01. On 9-13-01, Kathy Baumgardner felt led to start this quilt project. What started out as one quilt has turned into five. One for the World Trade Center Memorial, the Pentagon, the Somerset County, PA Memorial, the FDNY and the NYPD. The end result consists of 5 quilts containing 524 squares from 47 states and 14 countries. Kathy currently exhibiting the quilts before they take up permanent residence in their respective areas-we are so glad she chose to share her wonderful tribute with VOICES members.
Freedom Quilts -- Betty Nielsen began a project to benefit 9/11 victims’ families after the attacks. With the help of her students and various groups around the country, Betty has made and collected over 4000 quilts to be distributed to each 9/11 victim's family.
VOICES has received a tremendous response from the airing this week of "On Native Soil." For those who missed the showing on Monday, Court TV will have encore presentations Sunday, August 27 at 2pm & Sunday, September 10 at 12pm. The documentary is rated TV-14 and could contain imagery that is difficult for some 9/11 Family Members to see. The On Native Soil DVD Special Edition DVD will be in stores August 22.

The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation |

Government reports are rarely beach reading, and the 9/11 Commission made a concerted effort to make their final public report as easy to read as possible. Their strategy was a success: the Report was a bestseller, and the knowledge it contained reached millions of Americans. But many Americans have not read the report, or read only portions. A new “graphic novel” adaptation to be released next week aims to help the 9/11 Commission’s Report reach a much larger audience.
The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation (Hill and Wang, $16.95 paperback, $30 hardcover), by writer Sid Jacobson and artist Ernie Colón (visit Amazon.com) will help millions more Americans, young and old, learn about the Commission’s investigation into the events of 9/11 and the lessons America must learn. According to promotional materials for the graphic novel: “The 9/11 Report puts at every American’s fingertips the most defining event of the century.”
Though they were initially skeptical of the project, 9/11 Commission Chair Thomas Kean and vice-Chair Lee H. Hamilton fully endorsed the graphic adaptation after seeing Jacobson and Colón’s work. Their foreword to the book commends "the talented graphic artists of this edition for their close adherence to the findings, recommendations, spirit and tone of the original commission report." Kean and Hamilton have written their own new book, Without Precedent: the Inside Story of the 9/11 Commission, published last week (visit Amazon.com). In addition to recording at the Marriott Financial Center during VOICES September 10th Information Forum. StoryCorps booths in New York City will be open extended hours on September 9, 10, and 11. The Lower Manhattan booth, which is near the Mariott Hotel, will have reservation slots available every hour beginning at 9:30 am, with the last slot starting at 7:30 pm.
