Dear Families and Friends,

As we enjoy the last few weeks of summer, our team at VOICES is busy finalizing plans for the September 10th Information Forum and September 11th Commemorative Luncheon.  The agenda for the two day event is coming together.

The Day of Remembrance, in partnership with the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, reflects our commitment to commemorate the lives lost and provide a place for the 9/11 community to gather.  We will offer an agenda of interest, including panel discussions, workshops and 9/11 exhibits.  The VOICES staff will conduct 9/11 Living Memorial workshops throughout the day.  Family members, rescue workers and survivors are invited to bring photographs, written materials and other mementos that we will digitize to include in the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive.  Reservations are necessary to meet with our staff, but mementos can be dropped off during the day for digitizing.

This week we learned that Dr. Charles Hirsch, Chief Medical Examiner will attend and his staff will provide an update to families and be available to make identification badges.  In addition, David Isay, Founder and President of StoryCorps will discuss his organization’s September 11th Initiative.  The National September 11 Memorial & Museum team, Thinc Design and Local Projects will provide an update on plans for the Memorial & Museum.

The anniversary of 9/11 remains a challenge for all of us.  Our objective is to provide an informative and supportive environment for those who would like to join in.  We hope you will be able to attend! Contact our office to make reservations and visit our website for an updated schedule of events.

Warm Regards,

Mary and the Voices Staff

NIST held a public webcast on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008 with its findings and recommendations following an extensive investigation into the collapse of the 47-story building.  The WTC investigation Web site at wtc.nist.gov has links to the full report, video and a broad range of accompanying materials. FDNY Releases Report on Deutsche Bank Fire

FDNY officials yesterday released a 176-page report and 40 pages of emergency radio transmissions recorded on the day two firefighters died in a fire at the damaged Deutsche Bank building near ground zero on August 18, 2007.

The report points out that firefighters entering the badly damaged and contaminated Deutsche Bank building to fight the fire faced confusion about the water supply and blocked stairwells among other difficulties. A grand jury is considering criminal charges against the city as a result of the fire. Read more.
