August 29, 2008
Dear Families and Friends,
For those of you who are just returning from vacation, I want to remind you to make reservations to attend the September 10th Information Forum and September 11th Commemorative Luncheon. This year’s two day event, entitled A Day of Remembrance, is a full agenda of panel discussions, workshops and a 9/11 exhibit. Our staff will be available by appointment to digitize photographs, memorial programs and other mementos you’d like to include in the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive. Seating is limited, so remember to contact our office early next week if you are interested in attending either day. In the coming week we will distribute a detailed schedule of events, but in the meantime we encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the event.
Today marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the Gulf coast in the summer of 2005 and took the lives of over 1800 people. As I’m writing this letter, news reports indicate that Hurricane Gustav is once again heading for the Gulf Coast. The prospect of another hurricane in the Gulf Coast, with tropical storm Hannah forming close behind, emphasizes the importance of preparedness. We have included a link to information from the American Red Cross on how to prepare for a hurricane. During the month of September we will join the Department of Homeland Security in providing a variety of tips on our website on how to ready your homes and families for an emergency.
In closing, as we celebrate Labor Day weekend our thoughts will be with those who may be affected by the storm.
Warm Regards,
Mary and the Voices Staff
