Dear Families and Friends,

 

This week VOICES officially opened our New Brunswick office. Thanks to our special guests - Governor Tom Kean, Congressman Rush Holt, Mayor Jim Cahill, Rutgers President Dick McCormick, DEVCO President Chris Paladino and 9/11 family member Meryl Mayo for their participation in the program. Over 200 attendees had an opportunity to see our new office and meet VOICES New Brunswick staff - Gina Reilly, Anu Gupta and Chris Edwards. We are grateful for the warm welcome!

 

We have a busy week ahead! This Wednesday, September 9th you are invited to attend our Day of Remembrance events in New Brunswick. The event will provide an opportunity for families, rescue workers and survivors to learn more about our work, visit our 9/11 Living Memorial Exhibit and hear an update on the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. We also look forward to hearing from Dr. Iris Udasin about her work with the rescue and recovery workers and from 9/11 rescue worker, Charles Giles about his personal experience. The event will be the opening of our 9/11 Living Memorial Exhibit which will be on display at the New Brunswick office for the month of September. On Thursday, September 10th we will host VOICES annual Day of Remembrance event at the Marriott Downtown Hotel located at 85 West Street in New York City. The event begins with registration at 9am and continues with a number of panel discussions, roundtables and presentations throughout the day. The program will conclude with a tribute to our friend and colleague, Beverly Eckert who recently perished in the plane crash in Buffalo. I hope you will join us in recognizing Beverly for her advocacy work that benefited so many in the 9/11 community. We have included a full schedule of events below. As we approach the 8th anniversary, all of us at VOICES are thinking of you and your families. September 9th Day of Remembrance - VOICES New Brunswick, New Jersey

VOICES cordially invites you to join us on September 9TH for our Day of Remembrance events at VOICES New Brunswick office located at 84 Albany Street, New Brunswick, New Jersey. In addition to the schedule of events, a 9/11 Living Memorial Exhibit will be on display featuring a display of photographs, written tributes, artwork and a memorial quilt created by victim's family members. The exhibit will be on display through the month of September.

In addition to September 9th, the 9/11 Living Memorial Exhibit will be on display at the VOICES New Brunswick office from September 11th through September 30th, Monday through Friday between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

 

 

September 10th Day of Remembrance

 

9/11 Living Memorial Workshops by Appointment

9/11 Living Memorial workshops will be held throughout the day. Family members, rescue workers and survivors are invited to bring photographs, newspaper articles and personal mementos to document their loved ones life as well as firsthand accounts of their personal experience. VOICES staff will be available by appointment to digitize mementos to include in the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive. You may also drop off items for digitizing that can be picked up later in the day or returned by mail after the event. Each anniversary VOICES honors an individual that has made significant contributions that benefit the 9/11 community. Please join us at the conclusion of the day to honor our friend and colleague, Beverly Eckert who recently died in a plane crash in Buffalo, New York. Many of you knew and worked alongside Beverly over the years as she advocated for reforms and a memorial at Ground Zero. We are collecting reflections from members of the 9/11 community to present to Beverly's family. Feel free to send a note electronically or bring it to the event and we will include it in our book. Beverly's sisters, Karen Eckert and Susan Bourque will be accepting the award.

Event Description:
Those who were lost in the unthinkable terrorist attacks of 9/11 totaled 2,973 people. Among those victims, 152 were Connecticut’s own.


The Connecticut Historical Society presents an award-winning exhibit that looks at how Connecticut’s citizens responded during a time of national crisis. Included in the exhibit are photographs, objects, an audio/video station with oral histories, and special memory books devoted to the 152 victims.

An annual Memorial Event is scheduled on Thursday, September 10th at 6 pm. In addition, we have a memorial picture board for September 11th victims that were from Western New York or are related to residents of this area. There will be a tolling of the bell followed by a moment of silent prayer at 8:46 AM in remembrance of the attack on the north tower of the World Trade Center, and again at 9:03 AM in memory of the south tower being struck.   Four more bells will toll toward the end of the ceremony in remembrance of the strike on the Pentagon, the collapse of the south tower, the crash of Flight 93 into Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the north tower collapsing

Event Description:

As we approach the 8th anniversary of the attacks of September 11th, 2001, we would like to invite you to a reception at the site of the State of New Jersey’s September 11th Memorial in Liberty State Park, New Jersey. The event will begin at 1:30 pm inside the Railroad Terminal adjacent to the memorial site. There will be music, light refreshments and opening remarks.

We are pleased to announce that Phase 2 construction of the memorial, including the amphitheatre sloped towards Ground Zero, has been completed. The grounds of the memorial site will be open to the public on September 11th. This will mark the first time we have had a gathering of family and friends of the memorial since the groundbreaking in 2004.

We look forward to seeing you and showing you the progress we are making.

LAURA'S ANGELS 9-11 MEMORIAL GATHERING

We will remember the victims with prayers, with music, and by  reading their names aloud as we gather around the beautiful angel tree;  the centerpiece of our Memorial Garden  As in years past, the tree will be adorned with angels made by  our friendship circle volunteers to pay tribute to the victims.
 
"The Field of Angels", a limited edition print, created by local artist Kim Pearce, will also be displayed and  made available  to the public for the first time

WORSHIP SERVICE TO COMMEMORATE 9/11 TRAGEDY - LAMBERTSVILLE, NEW JERSEY

Event Description:
A worship service of comfort and hope for the families, friends, and neighbors of those who died in the 9/11 attacks eight years ago.

The liturgy will include prayers and the congregational hymns "Abide With Me," "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," "I Then Shall Live" (sung to the tune of Jean Sibelius's "Finlandia"), and "God of Grace and God of Glory.."

Scriptural passages and other writings will be read, and there will be a candle-lighting to honor those whose lives are being remembered. In keeping with the ecumenical nature of the service, church bells throughout the city will be rung at appropriate times.

The Rev. Gail Burwa, Assistant at St. Andrew's and Chaplain to WTC Families for Proper Burial, Inc., will preach.

The Choir of St Andrew's, under the direction of Michael T. Kevane, the church’s organist-choirmaster, will sing.


There will also be music by members of the Lambertville Brass and by members of the Opera Project of 50 York Street. The prelude and other organ music will be presented by Mr. Kevane.
