Dear Families and Friends,

 

For those of you who are just returning from vacation, you should have received an invitation to our upcoming Day of Remembrance events. This coming Monday, August 31st we will officially open our New Brunswick office with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. Governor Tom Kean will be among the honored guests. We are very excited about opening our New Brunswick office and working with the families in New Jersey. The ribbon cutting ceremony begins at 11am and will be followed by a reception and open house. All are welcome to attend.

 

On Wednesday, September 9th we will host our Day of Remembrance in New Brunswick. The event will begin at 10am with a reception and presentation on the 9/11 Living Memorial Project. Families are invited to bring A light lunch will be served

 

Thursday, September 10th we will host our 8th Annual Day of Remembrance at the Marriott New York Downtown Hotel at 85 West Street. This year’s event is a full agenda of panel discussions including an update from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum and the 9/11 Living Memorial Project. In addition our staff will be available by appointment to digitize photographs, memorial programs and other mementos you’d like to include in the 9/11 Living Memorial.  The day will conclude with a presentation of the Building Bridges Award in memory of Beverly Eckert. We invite each of you to send your memories of Beverly to us via email or by mail. The notes will be included in a book that we will present to Beverly's family. We have included a preliminary schedule below and will update you with the panelists.  Seating is limited, so remember to contact our office to make reservations.

9/11 Living Memorial Workshop by Appointment

 

9/11 Living Memorial workshops will be held throughout the day. Family members, rescue workers and survivors are invited to bring photographs, newspapers articles and personal mementos to document their loved one's life as well as firsthand accounts of thier personal experience.

 

VOICES staff will available by appointment to digitize mementos to include in the 9/11 Living Memorial digital archive. You may also drop off items that can be picked up later in the day or returned by mail after the event.

9/11 Memorial Preview Site Opens Near World Trade Center

 

Provides Visitors with Information about Memorial and Museum, Live View of Construction Progress, and Opportunity to Share their 9/11 Stories with the Museum

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum opened a 9/11 Memorial Preview Site near the World Trade Center.  The Preview Site provides the public with the opportunity to learn about the Memorial and Museum, view real-time images of the construction progress at the World Trade Center site, and participate in the creation of the Museum by sharing their 9/11 stories.  9/11 Memorial & Museum President Joe Daniels was joined by Monica Iken, a 9/11 Memorial Board Member who lost who husband on September 11, 2001; George Fertitta, CEO of NYC & Company; Jim Whitaker, Project Rebirth Founder and Director; and Paula Lawrence, a representative of the Starr International Foundation at a press conference to unveil the Preview Site.

Share Your Story with the Museum in the Washington Metropolitan Area

 

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is pleased to be working with Arlington County and partner StoryCorps, to record oral history interviews with victims' family members, first responders, volunteers, survivors, and witnesses of the 9/11 attacks. The Memorial Museum will preserve these personal stories in order to tell the story of 9/11 and to remember those who were killed.

 

For three days – September 2, 3, and 4 -- Museum oral historians and StoryCorps staff will conduct oral history interviews at the Arlington County Government Center in Arlington, VA. These stories will play a vital role in the Museum’s exhibitions and programming, enabling authentic accounts of 9/11 and its aftermath.

Event Description:
Those who were lost in the unthinkable terrorist attacks of 9/11 totaled 2,973 people. Among those victims, 152 were Connecticut’s own.

The Connecticut Historical Society presents an award-winning exhibit that looks at how Connecticut’s citizens responded during a time of national crisis. Included in the exhibit are photographs, objects, an audio/video station with oral histories, and special memory books devoted to the 152 victims.

Amherst NY 9/11 Remembrance of Western New York Families of September 11th will create our annual Remembrance Tribute. This includes installation of a flag with a nametag in memory of each person who was lost on September 11th.  The tribute remains up until September 14th.

We will hold our annual Memorial Event on Thursday, September 10th at 6 pm. In addition, we have a memorial picture board for September 11th victims that were from Western New York or are related to residents of this area.

WORSHIP SERVICE TO COMMEMORATE 9/11 TRAGEDY

Event Description:
A worship service of comfort and hope for the families, friends, and neighbors of those who died in the 9/11 attacks eight years ago.

The liturgy will include prayers and the congregational hymns "Abide With Me," "The King of Love My Shepherd Is," "I Then Shall Live" (sung to the tune of Jean Sibelius's "Finlandia"), and "God of Grace and God of Glory.."

Scriptural passages and other writings will be read, and there will be a candle-lighting to honor those whose lives are being remembered. In keeping with the ecumenical nature of the service, church bells throughout the city will be rung at appropriate times.

The Rev. Gail Burwa, Assistant at St. Andrew's and Chaplain to WTC Families for Proper Burial, Inc., will preach.

The Choir of St Andrew's, under the direction of Michael T. Kevane, the church’s organist-choirmaster, will sing.


There will also be music by members of the Lambertville Brass and by members of the Opera Project of 50 York Street. The prelude and other organ music will be presented by Mr. Kevane.

9/11 World Trade Center Run to Remember

 

Join VOICES in the 9/11 World Trade Center 3K Fun Run or 5K Run to Remember on September 6, 2009

 

Voices of September 11th is proud to participate in the Inaugural World Trade Center Run to Remember on September 6, 2009 on Governors Island in New York City. We invite you to join us to honor the memories of all the 9/11 victims while raising funds and awareness for several 9/11 organizations including Voices of September 11th.

 

The Inaugural 9/11 World Trade Center Run to Remember, sponsored by the Run to Remember

Foundation, Inc. will include a 3K Fun Run and a 5K Run/Walk on Governor's Island with more than five miles of car-free biking, acres of green space for picnics, art exhibitions, performances, and beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty.  The ferry ride to the island is free.

VOICES invites our membership to run/walk in the race on behalf of Voices of September 11th. There is a $25 entry fee ($35 after August 31st).  Register online at www.wtcruntoremember.com and select a fundraising goal, then please ask friends and family to support your walk or run by donating to the event. Donations that are made on behalf of Voices of September 11th will support VOICES ongoing efforts to create the 9/11 Living Memorial as a meaningful tribute to those who perished on September 11, 2001 and those who survived.
