Dear Families and Friends,

Father's Day is a time to thank the special men in our lives - our fathers, step-fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers and those individuals whose guidance and sacrifice have shaped us in so many ways. It's also a time to remember those who aren't with us today, but whose memory lives on through the stories we share.

Over the years, our staff has had the privilege of working with families to chronicle the lives of their loved ones in the Living Memorial Project. Who better to tell the story than the family who loved them? Along with each photograph, they share heartwarming memories of remarkable men who touched their lives. We've heard about their athletic and academic accomplishments, their bravery and courage, their sense of humor, and most importantly about their generosity and commitment to their families and friends.

Just today, Dina Connelly stopped by the office to drop off photographs of her brother Pepe Salerno. We talked about the John "Pepe" Salerno Foundation that was established to benefit the 100 children who were born after 9/11 and the wonderful relationships that have resulted through their annual events. She also shared an inspiring story about a letter her Mother received from Sgt. R. J. Reyes, who proudly wore the names of Pepe Salerno and Peter J O'Neill, Jr. on his helmet while serving in the Marines. He wrote in his letter, "It is an honor to fight for America, and it is an honor to fight for your son Pepe and all of those innocent people who were killed on 9/11." Similarly, we've heard touching stories from other families whose loved ones responded to 9/11 - by working in the recovery effort at the World Trade Center and the pentagon or by serving in the military. Sadly, many lost their lives, but memory of their lives is preserved through the stories told by family and friends. Their stories demonstrate that we are all interconnected. Our shared values, passed on from one generation to another, prevail for the greater good. We remember these remarkable men for their bravery and courage.

On Father's Day, we celebrate all the special men who have influenced our lives!

Sincerely,

Mary Fetchet & the VOICES Staff
