Spring Highlights

Raising Awareness About Mental Health

Although not commonly discussed, mental health challenges are actually very common. Approximately 1 in 5 adults - 43.8 million Americans - experience mental illness in a given year; however, only 41% received mental health services in the past year.

Left untreated, mental health issues can result in lost earnings, hospitalization, medical issues including substance use/abuse, leaving school or employment, incarceration, and in some cases suicide. Oftentimes, when an individual suffers from mental illness, the whole family is affected. More.

VOICES 5th Annual New Jersey Symposium

On April 20, VOICES hosted our 5th annual New Jersey Symposium, "Promoting Resiliency in Communities Impacted by Trauma." The day-long event featured presentations and panel discussions from subject matter experts working in the fields of mental and occupational health.

Our thanks to David Grand, Ph.D. for his keynote presentation, all those who shared their expertise and insights, and to Jeff Feagles, former NY Giants punter and Super Bowl winner for his inspiring remarks during lunch.

We appreciate the support of Dr. Barry Mascari and Dr. Jane Webber of Kean University, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the FealGood Foundation for co-sponsoring this event.

Building Resilience Together

VOICES provides long-term mental health care and resources for victims' families, survivors and responders and assists communities in preparing for and recovering from acts of terrorism and mass violence.

Each week, VOICES hears from those we are proud to work with and provide support services to. Here is a note we received from one of our generous donors:

"Thank you for the vital work that you are doing to help our country prepare for and deal with mass tragedies. I am saddened that the protocols and procedures that you are developing are even necessary, but am thankful that VOICES continues to push forward and make progress in developing them. And I am certain that what you are doing today will not only save the lives of potential victims but allow those who do survive to find healing, peace and even joy."

VOICES relies on donations, sponsors, and grants to provide funding for our work.
