Dear Family and Friends,

Today we learned that Alice Greenwald, President & CEO of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum plans to step down after dedicating 16 years to the creation of this world class institution. We are grateful for her compassion and steadfast stewardship of our nation’s 9/11 story.

Alice joined the 9/11 Memorial in 2006 when the Museum was just a vision. Under her leadership she brought together key stakeholders, including the 9/11 families, responders and survivors. She brought intellect and sensitivity that was essential to documenting the most devastating terrorist attack in our country’s history.

Over the past 16 years we have had the honor of working with Alice on a range of projects, including VOICES 9/11 Living Memorial. She was passionate about honoring those who died by incorporating these images and personal stories as the centerpiece of the Museum’s In Memoriam exhibition.

Alice was also a constant presence at VOICES events, where she generously gave of her time to update and engage with the 9/11 community. She recognized the need for ongoing dialogue, and included us in a variety of committees to inform the Museums plans, such as the creation of the Memorial Glade, which honors the 9/11 responders and survivors.

Most of all, we consider Alice a dear friend and we wish her well in her next endeavor. It has been a privilege to work with Alice, and we are forever grateful for her important contributions that have left a legacy for future generations.

With gratitude,

Mary Fetchet & the VOICES Staff

PS Alice Greenwald’s announcement is below.

Dear Friend,

I wanted to share some personal news with you as a valued member of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum community. Yesterday, I officially informed our Chairman Mike Bloomberg and the Memorial & Museum’s Board of Trustees that I have made the decision to step down from my role as President & CEO. After dedicating the last 16 years of my life to helping create, evolve, and lead this organization, it was not a decision I made hastily or without considerable reflection.

It has been the most significant honor of my professional career to be among the stewards of the sacred mission of this place of national remembrance. It has only been with your help and support that I have been able to lead the Museum’s creation, oversee its first years of operation, and in these last five years, serve as chief executive. Twenty years after 9/11, I am deeply proud of all we’ve accomplished together and the fact that the 9/11 Memorial & Museum now stands as a globally recognized symbol of resilience, unity, and hope.

My love for, and unwavering commitment to, this institution certainly made this a difficult decision. Still, as we begin a new year and look to its promise of a new beginning, I know the time is right for the reinvigorated vision and fresh perspective that will come with new, energetic leadership.

As the Board undertakes a search for my successor, please know that I will remain fully committed to advancing our important work and will continue on as President & CEO until a new leader is in place. I will always be one of the Memorial & Museum’s staunchest advocates and have offered to be a resource in the years ahead as new leadership finds their path forward.

I want to thank Mike Bloomberg and the entire Board of Trustees for their many years of expert guidance, generosity, and seemingly limitless partnership. My eternal gratitude also goes out to the dedicated and talented 9/11 Memorial & Museum staff, without whom nothing would be possible.

And to the thousands of 9/11 family members, responders, rescue and recovery workers, survivors, and lower Manhattan residents – thank you from the bottom of my heart for entrusting me with the privileged task of preserving and sharing your story.

Wishing you and those you love a season of joy and a new year of promise and renewal.

With my gratitude, forever,

Alice M. Greenwald
President & CEO
